UK sees fast growth in AI patent applications

The number of artificial intelligence patent applications filed in the UK has more than doubled in the past decade and is growing at a similar rate to applications in the United States.

UK-based innovators published nearly 600 AI patent applications in 2017, compared with about 250 in 2008, according to a report released by the Intellectual Property Office on 18 June.

The IPO found that the vast majority of AI patents first filed in the UK—88 per cent—were also protected abroad. This was in contrast with the US and China, which had 53 and 19 per cent respectively of patents protected in other countries.
