Applications for UK patents down as foreign R&D activity drops

Patent applications in the UK have dropped by almost 10 per cent, with one expert blaming a decrease in R&D activity by foreign multinationals in the country.

According to the latest innovation and growth report from the Intellectual Property Office, patent applications fell by 9 per cent between 2017-18 and 2018-19.

This is the latest decrease in a long-term decline of patent activity in the UK. It follows a 5 per cent drop in applications between 2017 and 2018.
