Any peer-reviewed articles supported “in whole or in part” by the National Institute for Health Research should now be made free at the time of publication.
The requirement to use the gold route of open access came into effect on 1 April.
In a statement, the NIHR said that the requirement would cover review articles not commissioned by publishers, final reports and executive summaries. The NIHR expects the open-access system to be implemented progressively, with a target of four years set for “full compliance”, the statement said.
