Universities must try harder on open access, say publishers

Publishers that offset article-processing charges against journal subscriptions say that universities still don’t have a good grasp of their academics’ publishing behaviour.

“It’s our experience that universities don’t know what research is being published from research that Research Councils UK funds,” said Steven Hall, managing director of IOP Publishing, in a meeting during the Glasgow conference of the scholarly communications organisation UKSG on 30 March.

Speaking at the same meeting, David Ross, executive publisher for open access at the SAGE publishing house said universities have to ensure that authors are aware if their institution is in an offsetting scheme.
