Computer science preprints booming as physics slows

The number of preprints being submitted to arXiv, the online research article repository, has more than doubled in eight years.

The website received 123,523 submissions in 2017, up from just over 60,000 in 2009, according to its submission statistics. More than 10,000 preprints a month were submitted last year.

Physics accounted for 47 per cent of preprints uploaded in 2017. Mathematics ranked second, at 26 per cent, while computer science, which made up 22 per cent of submissions, was the fastest-growing area.
