UK universities push back in Elsevier negotiations

Institutions rebuke publisher’s journal agreement offer, with two months to go until current deal expires

UK universities have rejected the latest offer from publisher Elsevier during protracted negotiations to cut the cost of publishing and support a transition to immediate open access.

In a statement published on 28 October, UK universities said that they supported a recommendation from the negotiating team to reject Elsevier’s proposal, as it “does not yet meet the two core objectives of the negotiations” to cut costs and establish immediate open access to UK research.
