Beagle-breeding row goes to the minister

The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles, has been asked to settle a row over plans for a facility that would breed beagle dogs for use as laboratory animals.

His junior minister, Robert Neill, explained in answer to a Commons written question that a company called B&K Universal Ltd had tabled a planning application to expand its animal-breeding facilities at Grimston Park near Hull. This was refused by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council in June and the company lodged an appeal with the Planning Inspectorate.
