Royal Society president Paul Nurse welcomed the chancellor George Osborne’s Royal Society speech on science on 9 November as a sign that “science is being moved to the centre of the Treasury’s thinking”.
Towards the end of a press briefing with science minister David Willetts after the speech on 9 November, Nurse was asked by Willetts to give his view on the announcements. Nurse replied that he would make his comments beyond the issue of funding, as “scientists whine about money all the time”.
