Academics support Leveson charter

Colin Blakemore and Richard Dawkins are among the signatories of the UK campaign group Hacked Off’s declaration in support of the cross-party royal charter on press regulation.

Granted by the Privy Council on 30 October, the royal charter will create a watchdog to audit a new press regulator.

Hacked Off’s declaration says: “It is our view that this charter safeguards the press from political interference while also giving vital protection to the vulnerable. That is why we support it and that is why we urge newspaper publishers to embrace it.”
