Nobel laureate slams ‘luxury’ journals Nature and Science

Cell biologist and open-access journal editor Randy Schekman has vowed not to publish research from his lab in three journals that he describes as “damaging to science”.

Schekman, editor of the open-access journal eLife, wrote a comment piece in The Guardian on 9 December, claiming that Nature, Science and Cell are more focused on their reputation than on stimulating the most important research.

“The exclusive brands are…marketed with a gimmick called ‘impact factor’,” he wrote, “a deeply flawed measure, [the pursuit of] which has become an end in itself—and is as damaging to science as the bonus culture is to banking.”
