Lib Dems pick science stars

A chartered engineer and a physics teacher have been selected by the Liberal Democrats as part of six Team Science candidates for the UK's next general election.

Lib Dem candidates being selected to stand in the May 2015 general election include: engineer Lucy Care, standing in Derby North; physics teacher Layla Moran, who is challenging Conservative Nicola Blackwood in Oxford West and Abingdon; and Judith Bunting, who has directed TV science programmes Tomorrow’s World and Horizon and will stand in Newbury. The team also includes former researcher Julian Huppert, seeking re-election as MP for Cambridge.

The candidates have been selected as Team Science by the party’s Association of Liberal Democrat Engineers and Scientists, Aldes. The association said in a statement that the aim of Team Science was to raise donations and coordinate volunteers who want to see a stronger voice for science, engineering, technology, medicine and evidence-based policy in the 2015 election. Between them they hope to raise a variety of science issues in the campaign, from the creation of more Catapult centres to improvements in the school science curriculum.
