Gove eyes up Willetts’s job

In an interview with the Financial Times, UK education secretary Michael Gove says that universities and science ought to be part of the Department for Education.

When asked about whether he would be interested in a different role, such as leading the Conservative party, Gove said: “What I’d really like to do is this job, plus universities. I think that universities and science should be in this department.”

Universities and science, for many years in the Department of Education, were moved to what is now the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills following a white paper in 1993.
