Brexit would damage UK science, says Johnson

Science minister Jo Johnson has said that the UK needs the “rich source of funding” that comes with European Union membership to retain the country’s scientific strength.

Writing in The Times on 27 January, Johnson said that the UK must recognise that the best scientific research is “rarely a narrowly national one” and that the EU provides some of the UK’s strongest research partnerships.

He added that a Brexit would risk losing the flow of bright students between the EU and UK, as well as a rich source of science funding.
