Scholar arrested for expired visa to be released today

The Home Office has said that it will release Paul Hamilton, an American researcher who was detained after his application for a visa extension was turned down.

Hamilton, who has been living in the UK for nine years, has been detained at the Morton Hall Immigration Removal Centre near Lincoln since 17 January.

He was in the UK on a Tier-4 student visa, but obtained his PhD degree from the University of Birmingham’s Shakespeare Institute in July 2015. Tier-4 visas allow students to remain in the UK for the duration of their studies and for up to four months after if the course lasts longer than a year. His lawyer, Theresa Okogwa from JBP Immigration Services, said that Hamilton immediately applied for leave to remain in Britain when he finished his studies.
