May prepares for Downing St as Leadsom quits race

UK Home Secretary Theresa May will become the next prime minister on Wednesday 13 July following the sudden withdrawal of energy minister Andrea Leadsom from the Conservative Party leadership contest.

Leadsom, who had campaigned for Brexit, announced her decision at around noon on 11 July. Shortly before 5pm, prime minister David Cameron announced in Downing Street that he would take his final cabinet meeting and prime minister’s questions on Wednesday, after which he would tender his resignation as prime minister to the Queen.

Leadsom read out a letter to Conservative Party bosses in which she said she was standing down from the contest because "a nine-week leadership campaign at such a critical moment for our country is highly undesirable”.
