‘Unreasonably high’ conservation standards deter marine protection

The UK government’s environmental protection strategy is threatening vulnerable marine habitats, the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee has said in a report.

The report, published on 25 April, investigated how policies and programmes of government departments and public bodies contribute to marine environmental protection and sustainable development.

MPs from the committee said that they were disappointed with the government’s lack of ambition to preserve marine protected areas and have called for more action for vulnerable habitats and species once a site has been identified.
