HEFCE chairman knighted

Tim Melville-Ross, chairman of the Higher Education Funding Council for England, has been knighted in the New Year honours list, while Janet Beer, president of the vice-chancellors’ group Universities UK, has received a damehood.

Melville-Ross was awarded a knighthood for his services to higher education, including nearly a decade at the helm of HEFCE’s board. He is also chairman of the Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and president of the Institute of Business Ethics.

Beer, who is vice-chancellor of the University of Liverpool and a former chairwoman of the higher education campaign group the Equality Challenge Unit, received a damehood for her services to equality, diversity and higher education.
