The benefits of international students to the UK economy are ten times greater than the costs, therefore they must be taken out of the net migration target, says a new report.
The gross benefits—including tuition fees, other spending and economic knock-on effects—of one cohort of international students to the UK is £22.64 billion, according to a report published by the Higher Education Policy Institute (Hepi) and Kaplan International Pathways on 11 January.
The research, undertaken by London Economics, analysed the costs and benefits associated with the 231,065 international students who started their studies in the UK in 2015-16. It found the economic benefits of hosting them far outweighed the cost to the public.
