Academics have backed calls for a second referendum on leaving the European Union, after three former science ministers gave the so-called People’s Vote their support and the prime minister faced growing opposition to her Brexit deal.
Yesterday Research Fortnight revealed that three former UK science ministers—Jo Johnson, David Willetts and Ian Taylor—have now all called for a second referendum. Johnson, who served as minister for universities and science from 2015 to 2018, resigned as transport minister last week, calling for a fresh vote on Brexit as he gave his reasons for resigning in a video.
Mike Galsworthy, co-founder of the campaign group Scientists for EU, described Johnson’s resignation as “explosive” and a “game-changer” that set a solid trend for Conservative moderates.
