Scientists ‘are allowed to speak’ during election purdah period

Science Media Centre sends reminder that purdah does not restrict commentary from academics

As the UK gears up for a general election on 12 December, government-funded scientists have been reminded that they are allowed to speak about their work, despite past concern over pre-election ‘purdah’ rules.

Rules require civil servants to be politically impartial in the run-up to a general election to prevent them from influencing or appearing to influence the outcome.
