Government promises ‘outward facing’ future for research

The universities and science minister has set out plans for the UK to continue to be a major player in international research, as Brexit negotiations continue.

Chris Skidmore launched the government’s long-awaited international research and innovation strategy at the EUREKA Global Innovation Summit in Manchester on 14 May. In a speech in front of 1,800 delegates from more than 60 countries, the minister said that the UK was committed to remaining “an outward-facing global partner” and that it would do so through “partnerships at multiple levels guided by excellence and impact”.

In the strategy, the government stresses its intention to explore association to Horizon Europe, the European Union’s next research and innovation programme, and the Euratom research and training programme. It also states the government’s plan to deepen its ties with Africa and build new bilateral partnerships with support from the UK’s network of science attachés in 47 UK embassies.
