The government needs to extend its promise to underwrite successful bids to European Union funding schemes after Brexit, the head of the international arm of vice-chancellors’ group Universities UK has said.

Currently the government has promised to pay for all UK participation in the EU’s vast Horizon 2020 programme as a so-called third country, which the country would become if it failed to negotiate ‘associate’ status to the scheme.

Speaking at the annual conference for the Association of Research Managers and Administrators in Belfast on 17 June, UUKi head Vivienne Stern said the underwrite guarantee should be extended into the first calls of Horizon 2020’s successor programme, Horizon Europe.
