Science minister quits in week of chaos

The UK science minister’s dramatic resignation from his own brother’s government has capped a chaotic week for British politics, universities and research organisations.

Jo Johnson resigned on 5 September, just six weeks into his second stint as universities and science minister, prompting disbelief and disappointment in higher education circles.

On 5 September, the brother of UK prime minister Boris Johnson took to Twitter to announce that he would be stepping down as the Conservative MP for Orpington and his role as universities and science minister, saying he was “torn between family loyalty and the national interest” and calling it an “unresolvable tension”.
