Jo Johnson, brother of the prime minister, has announced his resignation as MP and science minister.

“It’s been an honour to represent Orpington for 9 years & to serve as a minister under three PMs,” he said in a tweet on 5 September. “In recent weeks I’ve been torn between family loyalty and the national interest—it’s an unresolvable tension & time for others to take on my roles as MP & Minister. #overandout.”

Johnson was previously science minister between May 2015 and January 2018 before being replaced by Sam Gyimah, who himself quit in November to be replaced by Chris Skidmore. Johnson then replaced Skidmore in July.
