Spending review’s £15bn R&D pledge leaves big questions for research

‘Anaemic’ R&D budget fails to quell uncertainty over £22bn R&D target and other promises

The research sector is struggling to unpick the ramifications of the government’s latest spending review, which set out a commitment to invest almost £15 billion in R&D next year but included only vague details about other crucial promises and plans.

In a 25 November statement dominated by the Covid-19 crisis, chancellor Rishi Sunak promised £14.6bn for R&D in 2021-22, of which £11.1bn will run through the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
