Reshuffle dents academia’s confidence in government

Split of universities and science ministerial role causes concern in sector

The decision to split the job of science and universities minister into two has caused disquiet in academia, adding to concern about the delivery of government R&D promises.

News that Chris Skidmore had been sacked from the role for a second time on 13 February, in a dramatic day of government changes, was met with regret by prominent voices in higher education and research. More surprise followed as Skidmore’s role was split in two, with each job going to a different department.
