Autumn statement: Chancellor says institutions will be at the heart of investment zone policy

The chancellor of the exchequer has said the government will increase its focus on how universities can help to boost economies in disadvantaged areas, as it seeks to reinvigorate its “levelling-up” agenda.

Delivering his autumn statement on 17 November, Jeremy Hunt said that the government would place higher-education institutions at the heart of its policy on “investment zones”—geographic areas with specific tax and regulatory rules intended to drive economic growth.
