Party leaders make R&D pledges in first new year speeches

Sunak and Starmer outline views on universities and innovation

Prime minister Rishi Sunak has promised to make the UK a “beacon of science, technology and enterprise” as he confirmed plans to increase the country’s R&D budget in his first major speech of 2023 on 4 January.

A day later, Labour leader Keir Starmer praised UK universities and researchers but said the government was not fully tapping their potential, in a speech delivered at University College London.
