Redirection of funds to UK-based refugees leaves “vital” global R&D programmes unfunded, says development institute
The government missed its spending target for international aid by a wide margin last year after it redirected funds to refugees and asylum seekers in the UK, according to the Institute of Development Studies.
The institute’s director, Melissa Leach, said the government should not be using Official Development Assistance (ODA) to help refugees in the UK as that budget “is intended [to support] the economic development and welfare of countries with the lowest incomes”.
