Department for Education ‘is driving a cut in research funding’

Former universities and science minister says tuition fee freeze is harming R&D

The UK government is effectively cutting research funding by failing to facilitate sufficient cash for domestic students, a former universities and science minister has claimed.

Writing for the right-leaning Policy Exchange think tank, David Willetts—now a Conservative member of the House of Lords—said that while tuition fees for overseas students were cross-subsidising R&D activities in universities, the stagnation of domestic fees was holding research back.
