Virus testing and research facility dropped after total spending of £474 million

The UK government has paid £14.4 million to abandon a so-called ‘mega-lab’ that received nearly half a billion of public funding, Research Fortnight can reveal, prompting claims of a “huge waste of taxpayers’ money”.

There was shock when the Rosalind Franklin Laboratory, set up during the Covid pandemic, appeared on property website Rightmove at the end of last year.
