Labour leader tells Question Time audience that U-turn on fees was taken to fund healthcare

Labour leader Keir Starmer has told a television audience that he abandoned his promise to abolish university tuition fees in order to direct more public money to the National Health Service.

On a special edition of BBC Question Time, filmed at the University of York on 20 June, Starmer was asked about Labour’s “backtracking” on tuition fees, in reference to him abandoning the party’s 2019 commitment to abolishing them. He was asked why Labour should be considered “trustworthy”.
