Former New Labour home secretary to become peer and expected to take higher education role

Former home secretary Jacqui Smith has been named as a minister at the Department for Education, and is expected to take on the higher education, further education and skills brief.

The DfE has not yet confirmed Smith’s responsibilities, but it is expected that she will lead on Labour’s post-18 education policy. She will do so from the House of Lords, with the government stating that she is to be made a life peer.
