Northern Ireland reports record R&D spending

R&D spending in Northern Ireland reached £645 million in 2013, a £21m increase on the previous year.

Figures from the Northern Ireland Executive show that total R&D expenditure in Northern Ireland hit record levels in 2013, growing 3 per cent in cash terms and 2 per cent in real terms from the previous year.

Industry made the biggest contribution to both the total expenditure and the growth. Businesses spent £481.8m on R&D in 2013, accounting for 75 per cent of the total investment. This was £20.5m higher than the previous year and is the highest amount that businesses have ever spent on R&D in the nation.
