Parliament should condemn the “massive, above-inflation pay rises of university vice-chancellors”, Respect Party MP George Galloway has urged.
Galloway tabled an early day motion on 10 March, in which he encouraged the house to note that pay among vice-chancellors in the Russell Group of research-intensive universities has risen by about £20,000 to an average of £293,000, with the Open University’s Martin Bean earning £407,000.
Bean “is apparently so busy he has just advertised for a £45,000-a-year speechwriter”, notes the EDM, which is based on media reports.
