The UK’s research councils and Technology Strategy Board should make sure there is funding available for research into making use of waste, according to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee.
In a report published on 6 March, the committee says: “We…recommend that the research councils and the TSB should collaborate to ensure that the funding environment nurtures research on extracting high value from waste and developing a bio-economy in the UK.”
Waste or resource—Stimulating a Bio-economy looks at how carbon-containing waste can be put to use, especially for economic benefits. UK research is strong in areas that could support a waste-based bio-economy, the report says. However, the government lacks a “coordinated, joined-up approach” that would foster this development.
