The UK's immigration policies have damaged recruitment of international science, technology, engineering and maths students, the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee has heard.
Giving evidence to the committee on 4 March, as part of its inquiry into international STEM students, Daniel Stevens, international students’ officer at the National Union of Students, said he could list numerous occasions when Home-Office-imposed policies had stopped universities recruiting students.
For instance, he said, some universities had told him they would have been happy to have students studying science subjects, despite their not having the necessary English language skills to meet immigration policy requirements.
