Government told skilled-migrant visa cap isn’t working

The cap on Tier-2 visas for highly skilled workers isn't helping the government meet its immigration targets, but any reform should continue to prioritise migrants with PhDs, MPs have said.

In a report published on 18 December, the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee said that the restricting Tier-2 visas could damage the UK economy.

The report, which is the result of an inquiry into the UK’s skill shortages, calls on the government to reform the system. These reforms should give priority to visa applicants coming to do a PhD-level job, in order to address the lack of researchers and engineers in science, technology, engineering and maths.
