MPs will welcome ministerial committee, says Selborne

The Nurse review has given politicians “more than they could have hoped for” in recommending the creation of a ministerial committee to influence research policy, the chairman of the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee has said.

In an interview with Research Fortnight, John Palmer (Lord Selborne) said that he thinks the government will be “absolutely delighted” to implement the ministerial committee recommended by the former Royal Society president Paul Nurse in his review of the research councils.

“The former business secretary, Vince Cable, was always frustrated by his inability to influence science policy because of the Haldane principle," he says. “Nurse has recognised this frustration of ministers and given them, quite frankly, rather more than what they could have hoped.”
