Research into genetically modified organisms is well funded and well balanced in the UK, MPs on the Commons Science and Technology Committee have found, but they have heavily criticised the legislative framework for GM organisms in Europe.
In the report Advanced Genetic Techniques for Crop Improvement: Regulation, risk and precaution, published on 26 February, the committee criticised the European Union’s legislative framework for genetically modified organisms as “not fit for purpose”, adding that substantial regulatory reform was a necessity.
Current legislation has driven research activity out of the EU, the committee said, and “is putting the UK’s agricultural future at risk”.
