A Liberal Democrat minister has said that the medical innovation bill should not be rushed before the general election and that the issues around medical innovation should be reviewed with input from the royal colleges and patients' organisations.
The Telegraph has reported that the Medical Innovation Bill has been “pulled at the 11th hour” from the schedule of House of Commons debates and will now not be considered in this term of government.
The 28 February article quotes Maurice Saatchi, with whom the bill originated as a Private Members’ Bill from the House of Lords, as saying “I have no difficulty putting this at Nick Clegg’s door. […]There is no doubt that he has authorised the letter [pulling the bill].” He added that he thought Clegg would come to feel “very guilty” about the move. “To do what he has done, to kill all these people’s hopes, is something that will haunt him,” Saatchi is reported as saying.
