Peers call for a more research-active health service

The NHS is harming its own ability to provide care by failing to accommodate research-oriented doctors, Labour peer Robert Winston has said.

In a discussion on the future of the NHS in the House of Lords on 14 January, Winston, who is also professor of science and society at Imperial College London, said that doctors wanting to do research found it extremely difficult to persuade managers to let them spend time on such work.

“In spite of the ludicrous boasts that we are doing more research in the NHS and that every patient will be part of research, sadly, this is really not happening,” he said.
