A bill that proposed giving more powers to the police, security and intelligence agencies to access electronic communications, has received royal assent.
The Investigatory Powers Act 2016, which entered UK law on 29 November, allows for the creation of "Internet Connection Records". This government database will store every UK citizen’s web-browsing history and will be accessible by police, security and intelligence agencies.
The act also says that companies should be able to remove encryption on users’ data whenever “practicable”, but it does not explain what that would mean.
