Labour MPs launch last-ditch attempt to amend HE bill

Opposition MPs have tabled additional amendments to the higher education and research bill seeking to increase oversight of higher education providers.

The amendments, which refer to the teaching side of the bill, were tabled on 16 November by the shadow universities minister Gordon Marsden (pictured left), and Paul Blomfield (pictured right), Labour MP for Sheffield Central.

In one of the amendments, Marsden proposes the creation of a committee on degree-awarding powers and university title within the Office for Students. This would be modelled on the current Advisory Committee on Degree Awarding Powers and would provide advice to the OfS on the exercise of its functions.
