The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee says it will be holding an inquiry to get to the bottom of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills gap.
The committee said in a statement, published on 29 November, that it had launched the inquiry having repeatedly heard evidence during other inquiries that the UK was facing STEM-skills shortages.
The shortages are in “key growth sectors” such as big data, the committee said. At the same time, leading researchers have also pointed out that, in some sectors, there are higher-than-average levels of unemployment among STEM graduates.
