Confusion over costs and terms of investigatory powers bill

The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee has said that the government’s investigatory powers bill risks causing harm to the UK’s tech industries.

The committee has said that the government must take care not to disadvantage businesses through its bill, which will allow intelligence and law enforcement agencies to intercept and collect data on electronic communications.

The committee’s report, published on 1 February, says that the bill contains a number of poorly defined terms. These will make it hard for businesses to know how to comply with the legislation or how much compliance would cost.
