Jon Trickett, Labour MP for Hemsworth, will take up the position of shadow business secretary.
Hemsworth is said to be a close ally of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. He will take on this role in addition to his position as shadow lord president of the council and chairman of campaigns and elections.
He is one of a number of MPs who asked to broaden their portfolios following mass resignations from the shadow cabinet in protest against Corbyn’s leadership in the run-up to the UK’s referendum on European Union membership.
