Government to decide soon on small nuclear reactors

The UK government has said that it will decide in the coming months whether to invest in a research programme to build one of the world’s first small modular reactors.

In 2015, the government said it would allocate £250 million to a programme to develop a small modular reactor by the 2020s. Details of a competition to identify the best design were expected in 2016 but have yet to be announced.

In its response to a House of Lords Science and Technology Committee report on nuclear research and technology, published on 15 September, the government confirmed that a decision would be made on the competition “in the coming months”.
