Newton Fund faces axe at Spending Review

MPs on the international aid subcommittee say £735m fund should only be financed if redesigned

A House of Commons subcommittee has said that the government has not done enough to fix various issues with the Newton Fund, first identified by the Independent Commission for Aid Impact in 2019.

Until the ICAI concerns are addressed, the fund should not receive any more money in the forthcoming spending review, said a 15 June report from a subcommittee of the International Development Committee. The spending review was due in July but has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
