Scotland’s government has protected the research budget and will invest a further £1 billion in universities by 2017, according to its draft 2016-17 budget.
John Swinney, Scotland’s finance secretary, said on 16 December that Scotland’s budget was set to continue to reduce in real terms until the end of the decade.
However, within the tight financial constraints, Swinney said the proposed investment in Scotland’s universities—on top of the £4bn spent in the last four years—“protects the research process”, which is their fundamental strength.
